The Catholic Encyclopedia (©1913 Vol. XIV p.316) gives an account of Bishop Josip Strossmayer (1815-1905) at the Vatican I Council of 1870, from which we quote: "At the Vatican Council he was one of the most notable opponents of papal infallibility, and distinguished himself as a speaker. The pope praised Strossmayer's 'remarkably good Latin.' A speech in which he defended Protestantism made a great sensation... After the Council Strossmayer maintained his opposition longer than all the other bishops and kept up a connection with Johann J. Ignaz von Dollinger" the greatest Roman Catholic historian in Germany. His books commanded universal respect. This was "until October 1871. Then he notified von Dollinger and Reinkens that he intended to yield 'at least outwardly. (Source (http://www.mtc.org/bishop_s.html))
1629

"Listen then to what he writes in his second treatise on the first epistle of St. John: 'What do the words mean, I will build my church on the rock? On this faith, on that which said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.'" - Strossmayer

It does appear that shortly after the speech in 1870, the Papal States were lost and were not to be restored until 1929 (per the Lateran Treaty (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lateran_Treaty)). Quite a few events seems to have transpired around that time which may or may have not been related.

1775 - Prohibitory Acts / British Colonies put out of allegiance and ends obligations to Britain (http://israelect.com/ChurchOfTrueIsrael/American-Revolution.html)
1775 - 1776] American War of Independence
1776 - Declaration of Independence
1781 - Articles of Confederation ratified establishing "The United States of America"
1787 - Constitution for the United States of America (by unanimously by 'all states present')
1789 - 1799 - French Revolution
1798 - (French) General Berthier (under Napoleon I ("Bonaparte")) enters Rome, abolished the papal government
1799 - Pope Pius VI dies in captivity in France

1861 - Onset of the U.S. Civil War
1861 - Papal States reduced to Lazio (until 1870)
1867 - Federal Dominion of Canada was established
1870 - Bishop Strossmayer's Speech (likely June 2, 1870)
1870 - Italian troops enter Rome (September 20, 1870).
1870 - "Prisoner In the Vatican (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prisoner_in_the_Vatican)" (1870 to 1929)
1871 - District of Columbia Organic Act of 1871
... World War I
1929 - Lateran Treaty (July) [pertains to at least two separate 'sovereign entities': 1) the Holy See, and 2) the State of Vatican City]
1929 - "Black Tuesday" - Great Depression Begins (October 29)
... World War II

1633

ROME, JUNE 7. From 11 o'clock this morning there was another sovereign independent State in the world. At that time Premier Mussolini ... By that simple act the sovereign independent State of Vatican City came into existence. New York Times (re: Lateran Treaty), July 7, 1929

(Walter Veith seems to selectively have left some facts out of his presentations... for some reason. Question: If something has eyes like a man does it mean that it can "See"?)
