The Islands of Chicago

3809

The picture speaks for itself. It is based on a graphic originally made by a Chicago governmental commission. Chicago proper (downtown loop, city government buildings, as well as primary state offices outside of Springfield, Illinois) sits on at least two islands (highlighted in the above graphic and labeled as North Island and South Island respectively). The blue dot in the above image conceals the east-west river that runs between "North Island" and "South Island". In fact, there is a third smaller island to the west of the arrow labeled "North Branch Chicago River". The following illustration gives a closer look at how rivers divide downtown Chicago. Most maps have labels or symbols in the way that conceal the detail.
