Venezuela tells Caribbean to watch out for surge of refugees

Authorities in Venezuela are asking Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries to be prepared for a surge of refugees as the the socioeconomic situation in the country worsens.

Ramón Muchacho, Mayor of of Chacao in Venezuela’s capital city, Caracas, explained that as food shortages persist, people are leaving the country in mass amounts in search of more favorable living conditions.

Over the past week Venezuela has had a string of lootings as residents become increasingly desperate for food. At least two people have died as a result of those lootings.

While Venezuela has made no official request to CARICOM to accommodate the refugees, Muchacho’s recommendation to the region is a clear indication of where the refugees will be heading.

Considering how much CARICOM countries have benefitted from Venezuela’s PetroCaribe arrangement, the likelihood is that any such official request would be accommodated by CARICOM countries.

While Belize has been a part of the PetroCaribe program since 2005 when the People’s United Party (PUP) first signed on to the agreement; it was reactivated by the United Democratic Party in 2012. Since then Belize has borrowed an amount in excess of $350 million for various projects across the country, and also used some of it for debt-servicing.

Financial Secretary Joseph Waight explained that through the program, GOB is getting approximately $1 million every two weeks, however, the about of funding available had decreased dramatically over time, leaving around $40 million in November 2015.

Belize has already been experiencing issues with refugees for 2016. Immigration authorities explained that since January there has been an upsurge in refugee applications. The ministry explained that the upsurge creates a problem because many of the applicants are illegal immigrants who have been living in the country for many years.

Your Mexican should work just fine, no need to learn anything exotic. :)
