Evangelical Christian wins $150k in compensation after claiming he was fired for refusing 'mark of the beast'

According to the Exponent Telegram, Mr. Butcher claimed in his lawsuit that he made the effort to submit a letter to Consol Energy explaining his reasons for refusing to use the biometric hand scanner. Through the letter, Butcher presented to Consol Energy "his genuinely held religious beliefs about the relationship between hand scanning technology and the Mark of the Beast and Antichrist discussed in the Bible."

The company allegedly responded by sending him a letter from Recognition Systems Inc., the vendor that provided the hand scanner, telling him that, according to the Book of Revelation, the Mark of the Beast is found only on the right hand and the forehead. "Left hand up" sounds like an induction or ceremony for swearing someone in. Also, what some might not realize is that the 'chips' are seen as transponders showing possession (see pedis possesio and the use of transponders to show possession of asteroids/spacecraft).

This requires inserting a biometric chip under the skin?

Just a palm scanner from what I can tell.

I suppose the backside of someone's hand is unique enough...

There was a Taco Bell Case, in the mid-'90's kind of like this. That was a young man thinking (being taught) that the SSN was the mark of the beast. His dad handled it in administrative letters though and got him a summer's paycheck for working one day. The Taco Bell application for employment read (optional) for many years.

This case here is surprising because there was no mark being placed on the hand or forehead. So I guess it was just a mistake on the part of the employer's attorneys, thinking they would be able to adequately defend.
