Mastercard President of Cyber and Intelligence Solutions during project road map team meeting yesterday:

"Covid offered a unique opportunity to accelerate global citizen ID financial technology and adoption.
What would normally have taken 5 to 6 years, has been accomplished in 6 months."

FYI: ID2020.org is a UN, Microsoft, GAVI, Mastercard, Accenture consortium devoted to implementing a global citizen ID to be used for vaccination immunity certification, banking, and government services - first for refugees and poor "unbanked", then remaining middle and upper class population worldwide.

Description: Over the past decade, more people have joined the formal financial sector than during any other time in the history of banking. In 2011, nearly half of the world’s population (3.4 billion people) was unbanked and only six years later, that number was reduced by half. But even today, nearly 1.7 billion people remain shut out of the modern economy.

Not having a widely accepted form of ID presents one of the most significant barriers to financial inclusion, making things that most of us take for granted; such as getting a loan, starting a small business, or securing a title to land; difficult or impossible. And the “underbanked,” those with only limited access to financial services, also face severely constrained opportunity.

Good digital ID is fundamental to achieving universal access. Technology companies, financial service providers, telco’s, governments, and civil society are piloting a variety of innovative solutions to reach the last 30 percent but, while the rewards are high, so are the risks.
