For a while there was a hub-bub about him being a Rosicrucians and "Rosicrucians being known for faking their deaths". Its an interesting pop-culture and mainstream memeset, however, yes I believe you have brought for the answer. It never seemed quite settled to me. Projection/reflection..yes. Perhaps more merchandising.

    Very interesting bio:

Shakur was born on June 16, 1971, in the East Harlem section of Manhattan in New York City.[10] He was named after Túpac Amaru, an 18th-century South American revolutionary who was executed after leading an indigenous uprising against Spanish rule. His mother, Afeni Shakur, and his father, Billy Garland, were active members of the Black Panther Party in New York in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The infant boy was born a month after his mother was acquitted of more than 150 charges of "Conspiracy against the United States government and New York landmarks" in the New York "Panther 21" court case.
Interesting themes here "New York landmarks". He is said to have been shot and killed in 1996, the same year the Operation Bojinka plans were found. One of his most famous songs was Hail Mary. The Black Panthers or at least the New Black Panthers are said to have been headed by someone associated with the Nation of Islam. Mary, wife of Joseph in the New Testament is highly regarded in the Koran. Interesting motifs and themes nonetheless.

At the top of the "crucifix" there is a symbol like the symbol on NATO's flag which has been alleged to be a "sun on a cross". Projection..reflection.
