The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be. Genesis 49:10 (KJV)
Once Shiloh (i.e., the Messiah) comes, then the scepter and the giving of laws will depart from Judah.
* The "three wise men" showing up may have triggered rumors of the Messiah having come
* Herod being suspicious of a Messiah having been born initiated the Slaughter of Innocents and was said to have even killed of his own sons (Why was Herod suspicious? Did he connect the dots, realizing that the scepter had departed that the the one to whom the scepter belongs had come?)
* Herod Archelaus ("ethnarch") was dethroned and sent into exile (to Vienne in Gaul) by Augustus Gaul after a revolt led by Judas the Galilean
* Judah became a province of the Roman Empire--an autonomous part of the Roman province Syria
* Under the Roman procurator Coponius the authority in Judah to among other things to prosecute capital crimes was taken away (i.e. he is said to have removed judicial authority from the Sanhedrin)
* The religious leaders in Judah were said to have bewailed that the scepter had departed from Judah but that Messiah had not come as far as they knew
Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man? They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee. Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death. John 18:29-31
When the members of the Sanhedrin found themselves deprived of their right over life and death, a general consternation took possession of them: they covered their heads with ashes, and their bodies with sackcloth, exclaiming: 'Woe unto us for the scepter has departed from Judah and the Messiah has not come. From Babylonian Talmud, Chapter 4, folio 37.
So we have:
1. Something disturbed Herod to the point of encouraging him to initiate the slaughter of the innocents or even the killing of his own son(s)
2. That the scepter departed from Judah is a matter of historical record (rather than being mere allegory).
Could the reason Jesus/Joshua remained silent before Herod Antipas is because he knew among other things that the scepter had departed from the house of Judah and that Herod lacked authority?? (Jesus/Joshua answered Pilate but not Herod Antipas)
Why didn't the three wise men come to see Herod who the Romans had appointed "King of the Judeans"?
